Anything we do can either be worship (and therefore God-glorifying) and it can also be sinful (self-glorifying). if something we do is worship, then it is in no way "distracting" for people to see/hear/experience it. In fact, if it is really giving God glory, then it doesn't distract them from God but actually draws them closer to Him.
As much as I'd like to stand behind a curtain when I lead worship, I know that when I am truly worshiping with my guitar and voice that God is glorified and others are drawn to Him through that. It would actually be more selfish for me NOT to let that worship be seen/heard. Make sense?
So yeah it's a heart issue... why are we doing it, etc. But I don't think the proper response is to dance in the back or to not dance at all from fear of being prideful. I think it's more prideful not to do it. :)
This is why David dance freely in the streets (the whole II Samuel 6:22 thing).... He wasnt being distracting or selfish... he was praising God freely and it was pleasing to God and glorified Him for others to see.

Anything Can Be Worship
I just sent this to some potential 6:22 dancers via a private Facebook message, but I thought it was worth considering for everyone, regardless of your gifts or talents.

Okay so recently God's been dealing with me about what I see worship as, and you're right... God told me that He's worshiped not just through dancing (I like to dance and recently I have had an injured foot and knee). It has been selfish of me to overlook what God wants especially when He's the one who asked me to dance first... What I'm trying to say is be obedient to God, especially when worshiping and God will be seen in you and through you no matter where you are. Let God deal with you with the way you worship Him. Maybe He is calling you to do something different, just like 6:22, but glorifying Him all the same.
